Walk Through California Program: This is a very fun annual "in-school field trip" that the 4th grade looks forward to every year. In order to prepare for the program, each student is going to be receiving 1-2 "roles" that they must research, study and MEMORIZE before the event. They will also need to prepare a costume. The costume does not need be associated with their role. Some of the options are: gold miner, Mexican vaquero/ranchero (cowboy), missionary/padre, Native American, Spanish conquistador, a costume depicting their expert card (role), or a costume depicting California geography or produce. . Thank you for helping them to prepare a costume and memorize their part! Parents are welcomed and encouraged to come! The program will begin at 8:30 in the library.

The Final Book Report of the year is due on June 6th. The students checked out Newberry Award Winner/Honor novels before Easter Break. The book report is a "free choice" format and all students will present their report in front of the class. I went over the directions and expectations in class last week and gave the students a hand-out. There is also information posted on my website. The goal of this report is for the students to share their novel in a way that is creative and meaningful to them. I look forward to seeing their last big project of the year!
iPads are being collected during computer class on June 7th. iPads should be fully charged and the original (big) charger needs to be turned in with it. (Small iPhone chargers will not be accepted). Families need to repair damaged ipads well before the collection date. Students can make an appointment and take damaged ipads (cracked screens/broken home button) directly to their closest Apple store for repair. The cost is $50.00 for Apple care repairs.

From Coach Bohman:
Fit to Lead ~ Story
For the past few years, our PE curriculum has been focused on being "Fit to Lead." We desire for our students to be healthy in every area of their lives - physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally and relationally. I want to share a story of two of our 8th grade students being "Fit to Lead!"
Leadership, selflessness, teamwork, passion, hard work and sacrifice are all characteristics we have focused on throughout the year, they are key components of being "Fit to Lead." This morning, on their own initiative, Jo & Rafael chose to run the mile before school. These two 8th grade students want to finish their time at SJA knowing they did everything they could to be the best they could be in every aspect of life. Before starting to run, Jo had his eyes set on breaking the school record while Rafael wanted a personal record.
On an empty campus, with a chill in the air and nothing but the sounds of birds chirping, the pounding of their feet hitting the ground, and Coach Bohman cheering them on, these two boys pushed themselves to new limits and both reached their goals!! Jo broke a 4 year standing school record of 5:57 mile, by finishing 13 seconds faster, setting the new record at 5:44. Rafael broke his own personal record by over 2 minutes, finishing at 9:18. So proud of them!!
Many times, it's in moments of adversity that our true character is revealed. This morning Jo showed his true character!! Literally one minute after setting a new school record (one most of us can only dream of!), instead of celebrating or collapsing in fatigue, Jo once again took initiative and chose to run alongside Rafael as he finished his mile. The two boys, side by side, encouraged one another and reached new heights together!!
The front of Jo's shirt says, "Winning Starts Here." He is exactly right. Those words are written directly over Jo's heart... and his HEART is the place winning begins. Yes, Jo and Rafael were winners because they each broke a personal record, and Jo set the school record. But more importantly, they are both winners in life!! Revealing so clearly they are healthy physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and relationally. Thus their ability to lead, impact and empower others is at its greatest capacity!! I believe, as they graduate from SJA and move on to new opportunities, they will continue to be young men who make a difference and lead the way for real change in our world!!
Jo and Rafael thank you for being "Fit to Lead" - and being an example and inspiration to all of us to be the same!!
