Mission Reports
We are starting our biggest research project of the year next week on the California Missions. The students will get to choose their missions next Wednesday (everyone gets a different one). If there is one that is special to your family, please let me (and your child) know ASAP and I will do my best to make sure they get to research that mission. All of the missions and interesting and special in their own way so no matter which one they have, they are sure to learn lots!
This is an in-class research project, but the students may need to do some work at home depending on what they finish in class. One typed paragraph of the report is due each Friday. The final report will be put together at home. Information on the project, due dates and how you can best support your child will go home next Wednesday. Please look for that and go over it with your child.
Social Studies Chapter 3 Test
A study guide went home this week for the students to help them prepare for their test next Tuesday 1/31. The short summary at the end of each lesson in the chapter is a great review to reread.
Book Reports due 1/31
Hopefully all of the students have finished their biography novels and have been taking notes on their graphic organizer. I've recommended to the students that all notes be done by midweek, the script written by Friday, and the report completed over the weekend. That gives them one day/night before the report is due to ask any questions or get help with any technical difficulties. I typically have students upload iPad projects to my class YouTube account because it is the easiest way to share and present the projects. If you are not comfortable with this please let me know.
Penny Wars
During Catholic Schools Week this year we will be raising money for a community in need by participating in Penny Wars. Students can bring in pennies to their classes to earn points. They may also bring in nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar bills to put in other classes' buckets to subtract points from their score. Each cent is worth one point. This is a very fun and exciting fundraiser - if your child is searching in the couch cushions or under the car seats all week... that's why!
Care Package
On Veterans Day this year the students wrote letters to veterans including Thomas's Uncle Charlie. He sent us a video in December answering all of our questions and left us with a lot of positive thoughts and pieces of advise. He is now deployed in Iraq and the students would like to send a care package to him and his troop. During our class meeting yesterday we brainstormed ideas of things that could go in the care package in addition to or letters. I am asking that each student bring in one small item. I am planning on making a deck of cards and a puzzle with our class photo and a message on it. I would like all items brought in my next Friday, February
This ties in nicely with Catholic Schools Week as one of the many service projects that we do. Thank you for your help!
Valentines Day/ Baby Shower
It is an SJA tradition that on Valentines Day each year we have a baby shower where the students bring in baby gifts to be donated for mothers in crisis. It is a very fun addition to our Valentines Day celebrations. The students may dress up in festive "party clothes" (dresses/skirts and blouses, slacks and collared shirts for the boys... it is fun if they dress Valentine themed :-)
Students bring in a wrapped gift (typically the greatest need is for formulas and diapers). We then unwrap all of the gifts and play baby shower games. It is very fun!
Students may also bring in Valentines for their classmates on that day. A class list with instructions went home in their Wednesday file. Please keep our school s wellness policy in mind. There should be no candy attached to the Valentines. Students will get at treat at the class party.
Permission Slip for Mission San Diego Field Trip is going home in the students' Wednesday file. Please sign and turn in ASAP.
Father a Daughter Dance invitations went home yesterday. We hope you can attend this fun, community building event!
Spell -A-Thon
Results will be coming home soon - please collect all pledges and get them turned in!
iPads
Please take some time this week to child your child's iPad. There should be no games or apps that are not listed on my website. It is also a good idea to look through their e-mails. Technology is a wonderful educational tool, but it is important to monitor the usage closely and talk to your children about internet safety regularly.
