Working on our Science Research Projects

Hi 4th Grade Families,

We have just a few short (but busy) days before Christmas break! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas  filled with family, friends, love and laughter. It is such a beautiful time of year to reflect on all our of blessings.  I will be here in San Diego  with my fiance's family (for my first Christmas away from home!) and then I'll be headed to Portland to wedding dress shop with my mom and sister for the end of the break. :)

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!

The SJA Annual Christmas Pageant~ is this Thursday at 7:00 pm.  Students should be dropped off at the front of the school at 6:30 and come to the 4th grade classroom to get ready and take a class photo. Just my room moms will be in the classroom with me during this time.

Information about the Spell-a-Thon went home on Monday. Please help your child to get sponsors for this great academic fundraiser!

Nursing Home Field Trip- we are headed to the nursing home after mass on Friday. Students may bring a Santa Hat or Reindeer ears to wear during the field trip. We will be singing Christmas carols for the residents :)
Thank you to my drivers: Lisa, Charlie, Melissa, Sandra, Lori, Pam & Lane!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the sock drive!! I think we will be keeping a lot of toes warmer this season.

Friday is a noon dismissal day with NO AFTER CARE.

Christmas Gifts for Mom & Dad
are coming home on Friday - keep an eye out!

The fourth grade did a beautiful job at mass yesterday, thank you to all of the parents that joined us. I was so proud of all of my readers and new musicians! :)

Thank you to all of the parents who joined us for our end of unit celebration. The students have been studying California Native Americans since the end of September. They've produced some really great work. I hope you all had the opportunity to view your child's screencast. Their "Porqui Tales" and art are hung in the hall if you have not had a chance to see those. Next up: explorers! :)

Sock Drive: The SJA parish and school are teaming together for a holiday sock drive.  Please have your child bring in socks to donate to those in need this season.  If students bring in a pack of socks, they can have free sock dress for the entire week next week! Tis the Season!

Polar Express Christmas Party will take place this Friday after lunch. Thank you so much to the parents that have contributed to that cause. We couldn't do it without you! Students may wear their PJs to school on Friday for our celebration. We do not have mass, so they can just wear them to school- no need for the change of clothes craziness.

The SJA Annual Christmas Pageant will take place next Thursday 12/17 at 7:00 pm.  Students need to report to the 4th grade classroom at 6:30 through the front of the school.  Parents please drop of your child and go directly to the church. I promise I will take a class photo and share it with you all!  If your child has not checked off their costume, it is very important that they bring it in ASAP. Please e-mail me with any questions about this.

Spell-A-Thon~ information about this very important fundraiser will be going home on Monday.  All of the 4th grade words are a review of spelling words that we have studied this year. This will count as a test grade for our class.  Please support your child in their fundraising efforts!

Students should check out their next book report book during library next week. For our next report we will be reading biographies. These are usually a quick read, so if your child finishes the book early, they may want to check out another biography book or re-read it.  I'm looking forward to seeing all of the Newspaper Book Reports this Friday! :)

Nursing Home Field Trip next Thursday 12/18 9:30-11:00. Students may bring a Santa Hat to wear during the field trip. Thank you to my parent drivers: Lisa, Angie, Lori, Adrienne, Pam, Sandra, Melissa and Lane!

Noon Dismissal Friday, December 18th
No after school daycare on Friday, December 18th!

4th Grade Mass is this Tuesday, December 8th. Please join us for this holy day of obligation as we celebrate the Immaculate Conception of Mary.  Students should come to school in their dress uniform.

SJA Annual Christmas Pageant will take place on Thursday, December 17th.  The program starts at 7 pm in the church, but students should be dropped off at 6:30 at the front of the school. My room moms will help with costumes so all other parents should go straight to the church.

Students need to bring in their costumes this Friday to be checked.  The costumes are as follows:
4th Grade will dress in any combination of black and sparkly silver for the Christmas pageant

Girls:  Long pants or skirt/dress (not too short!) with with black tights.  Any combination of black with sparkly silver or black sequins or silver metallic fabric, accents or accessories. Sleeves long or short, with shoulders covered.  Shoes: Black or silver

Boys:  Black long pants with black crew neck quality t-shirt.  Silver chain around neck optional.  Shoes:  Black or dark.  SJA will provide a vest with silver stars.

Saint of the Month drawing contest is due on December 10th

Birthday Treats- if your child is bringing in treats (non-edible) for their birthday, please make sure that they are ALL THE SAME. It causes a lot of drama when there are variety and choices. Thank you!

End of Native American Studies Unit Celebration- the 4th grade will celebrate the end of our California Native American Studies Unit this Tuesday after mass. Students will have a chance to showcase their work and view the work of their peers. If you'd like to come see our gallery, please come to the 4th grade classroom after mass on Tuesday.

Fluency Practice - I've been working with the class on self monitoring their reading. Part of that is choosing books at the right level for them. Another part of it is reading fluently with expression. I'd like students to practice reading for fluency once a week and record their "Word Count Per Minute" on a table that I am sending home with them tomorrow. The sheet has all of the directions. I will collect this at the end of the trimester as part of their reading grade.
