Welcome Back to School 4th Grade Families!

I am so excited to be kicking off another great school year. I can tell already that this is a special class and that we are going to have a wonderful year together. I typically send my newsletters home on Wednesdays, so please look out for them. They will (hopefully) not usually be as long and wordy as this one. :)  Also, I use photographs in my newsletter each week as a way of communicating what is going on in this classroom.  Please let me know if including your child in classroom photos will be an issue, I am happy to accommodate.

This week (and this year) we will be taking a lot of time to build a strong sense of classroom community. I want all of my students to feel welcomed, loved and accepted in our classroom by their teacher and peers everyday.  It is my hope that school is a fun and safe place where they feel inspired and excited to learn.  We will also be practicing the 7 Habits of Successful Students all year long - more information on this to come!  Ask your child about some of the community, team building and leadership activities we've been doing this week.

At our class meeting the students discussed traits of a good student and a good teacher so that we know how to do our best this year!

Each student is unique, special and an important piece to our class puzzle.  We practiced leadership habits including cooperation and teamwork to put the puzzle together.

Please review your child's homework planner with them every night to ensure that they have a strong start to the school year. The reading log needs to be signed and turned in every Monday morning.  More on this at Back to School Night.

All textbooks need to be covered by Friday. Thank you for helping out your kiddos.

Mandatory iPad Meeting will take place Wednesday, 9/13 at 3:00 in the 4th grade classroom. Each 4th grade student and one parent MUST be present for this meeting, otherwise they will need receive their iPad.

Book Report Novel - the students had the opportunity to check out books at library today. For their first book report they get to select a "free choice" book. The requirements are:
  • The book must be a novel
  • It must be at their appropriate reading level
  • The student cannot have already read this book
  • It must have characters, a setting, a problem and a solution
  • Biographies and short stories are not good choices for this book report
  • The book needs to be approved by me by next Friday 9/8
We will write this first book report together in class so that students understand how to write a 4th grade level book report. The rest of the reports will be completed at home.  The novel needs to be read by 10/10.

Students should have a reading book in their desks at all times. They may bring their book report novel back and forth from school or they may have a book at home and a book at school. Please make a plan with your child for this.

There are lots of Volunteer Opportunities in 4th grade. Please use the link to sign up for volunteer dates. I will add more as the year progresses and we will have field trips scheduled soon where we will also need chaperones and drivers. Thank you in advance, we couldn't do it without you! www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0d4aafad29a57-volunteer

Our room moms this year are: Melissa Mahon, Melissa Kuhn & Kellie Kaseburg. They will be reaching out to your periodically throughout the school year for different events and needs. Thank you so much ladies for your help!

Background Checks and Safe Environment Training for Volunteers: The Diocese has changed its policy regarding volunteers. ALL volunteers must complete safe environment training on the CMG website. The training consists of three videos, with questions after each one. Please print the certificate of completion at the end and turn it into the front office. This certificate must be on file prior to volunteering on campus, in classrooms, on field trips, etc. In addition, anyone, including new families, who has not been previously Live Scanned will need to complete the background check, also located on the CMG website. You will be billed $20 to cover the cost of the background check.
