In order to prepare for the program, each student is going to be receiving 1-2 "roles" that they must research, study and MEMORIZE before the event. They will also need to prepare a costume. The costume does not need be associated with their role.  Some of the options are: gold miner, Mexican vaquero/ranchero (cowboy), missionary/padre, Native American, Spanish conquistador, a costume depicting their expert card (role), or a costume depicting California geography or produce. . Thank you for helping them to prepare a costume and memorize their part! Parents are welcomed and encouraged to come! The program will begin at 8:30 in the library.

From Coach Bohman:
Fit to Lead ~ Story
For the past few years, our PE curriculum has been focused on being "Fit to Lead."  We desire for our students to be healthy in every area of their lives - physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally and relationally.  I want to share a story of two of our 8th grade students being "Fit to Lead!"

Leadership, selflessness, teamwork, passion, hard work and sacrifice are all characteristics we have focused on throughout the year, they are key components of being "Fit to Lead."  This morning, on their own initiative, Jo & Rafael chose to run the mile before school.  These two 8th grade students want to finish their time at SJA knowing they did everything they could to be the best they could be in every aspect of life.  Before starting to run, Jo had his eyes set on breaking the school record while Rafael wanted a personal record.

On an empty campus, with a chill in the air and nothing but the sounds of birds chirping, the pounding of their feet hitting the ground, and Coach Bohman cheering them on, these two boys pushed themselves to new limits and both reached their goals!!  Jo broke a 4 year standing school record of 5:57 mile, by finishing 13 seconds faster, setting the new record at 5:44.  Rafael broke his own personal record by over 2 minutes, finishing at 9:18.  So proud of them!!

Many times, it's in moments of adversity that our true character is revealed.  This morning Jo showed his true character!!  Literally one minute after setting a new school record (one most of us can only dream of!), instead of celebrating or collapsing in fatigue, Jo once again took initiative and chose to run alongside Rafael as he finished his mile.  The two boys, side by side, encouraged one another and reached new heights together!!

The front of Jo's shirt says, "Winning Starts Here."  He is exactly right.  Those words are written directly over Jo's heart... and his HEART is the place winning begins.  Yes, Jo and Rafael were winners because they each broke a personal record, and Jo set the school record.  But more importantly, they are both winners in life!!  Revealing so clearly they are healthy physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and relationally.  Thus their ability to lead, impact and empower others is at its greatest capacity!!  I believe, as they graduate from SJA and move on to new opportunities, they will continue to be young men who make a difference and lead the way for real change in our world!!

Jo and Rafael thank you for being "Fit to Lead" - and being an example and inspiration to all of us to be the same!!

Happy Belated Mother's Day to all of you amazing moms out there! Your love and support make such a big difference in your children's lives. Our school community  is lucky to have such involved, amazing parents like you!

Thank You SO MUCH for the amazing Teacher Appreciation Week! I felt so loved and appreciated all week long. I feel honored to teach your children everyday. A huge thank you to Melissa Mahon, Del Mar Pizza and our 4th grade room mom for putting in so much time and effort to make the week so special.

Variety Show Costumes are due this week to be checked off. This counts as a test grade for music.
Boys and girls will wear blue jeans with their choice of bright (not pastel), solid Boomwhacker colors red, orange, yellow, lime green, kelly green, purple, or pink shirt; add accessories in any of these same or rainbow colors (ok to mix and match)--such as socks or hair ribbons. They may wear sneakers in any bright Boomwhacker color or white. The show will take place next Friday 5/26.

Beach Day is coming up on Monday, June 12th. We need parent chaperones to drive and we also need a pop-up for the class and a cooler. Please use the volunteer sign-up genius above if you are available to help! Permission slips are going home today in the students' graded work file.

We read the novel The Ballad of Lucy Whipple as part of our study of the Gold Rush Period of California history.  This week the students will be watching portions of the movie (starring Glenn Close) and will be comparing the novel & the film. There are a few scenes that are inappropriate and I fast forward through them.

May is the month of Mary. We have many special celebrations like our May Crowning Mass next Friday and a Living Rosary Prayer service on Monday, May 15th.  The 4th grade studied how to pray The Rosary back in October. This month we will be studying the Mysteries of the Rosary. The Rosary is one of our 4th grade prayers that we memorize, so the students will be learning about a group of mysteries each week in May and will be tested on them at the end of the month. A study guide was handed out last week.

Our Overnight Field Trip  to the Lazy W Ranch was a HUGE success! The students were polite, well behaved and really knew their California history!  We had two very full days of fun, hands-on learning. I loved getting to spend time with the students outside of the classroom and enjoy their fun personalities! Thank you again to our awesome chaperones for their time and energy, we couldn't have done it without you: Scott Lang, Chris Eakin, Hands Prosch, Mike Kimberlain, Mary McGuinness and Tinya Fleming!  I created video slideshow of the photos that I showed to the class today. I am still working on a way to privately share it with the 4th grade families. The file is too large to e-mail.  If you have any ideas, let me know (it is an iMovie file) :)

4th Grade Mass: The 4th grade will be leading worship and doing the readings at mass this week. We would love to see many 4th grade parents join us for our last mass of the year! Students should be at the church before 7:45!

Family Life started this week. If you still have the Parent Connection Packet, please send it back to school at your earliest convenience. Thank you!

Geometry- this chapter in math there are are ton of terms that the students are required to learn and memorize. We are creating Geometry Dictionary e-books to take notes and record real-life examples of the various geometry terms using drawings and photographs. This will be a big project grade for this trimester. If students are not staying caught up on their notes (or they are absent) they will need to add these notes to their Geo Dictionaries at home. A checklist will go home next week and the project will be due at the end of the chapter. The students will also be quizzed periodically throughout the chapter to ensure that they are studying their terms each week.

SPINNERS  are NOT allowed in the 4th grade classroom. These toys have been causing a lot of distraction at school and should be kept at HOME. Thank you!
