Welcome 5th Grade Students and Families!
I am thrilled to be joining the team at W.D. Hall and kicking off a new school year! I can tell already that this is going to be a busy and exciting year :)

My goal is for each and every one of my students to experience growth and success this year. I know that looks different for every child and I will work hard to meet the individual needs of my students  I am a big believer in teaching the whole child. We will be building character all year long while practicing perseverance, responsibility, accountability, kindness and, of course, good manners. I hope to prepare the students for middle school by teaching them to be good citizens of the digital and real world while building a strong sense of classroom community.

I wanted to note a couple of things for this first week of school:

  • Students will be receiving a yellow homework folder which they should bring to and from school everyday. There is a section for things that need to be returned to school (homework/forms) and a section for things that should be taken out and kept at home.

  • The students will have homework each school night. You can help your child by reminding them to check their homework planner and encouraging them to read, study their spelling words and practice their fast facts every night.

  • A homework planner is passed out on Monday and should remain in their folder all week long - parents need to sign it and it will be turned in the following Monday.

  • The students should be reading 15-20 minutes every night. They will turn in their reading log weekly. Please sign off that you have seen the homework planner and confirm that your child did their weekly reading.

  • We are going to be doing a few projects this week and in order to do so, I need your child to bring in a small photograph of themselves or their family (no larger than 4x6).

  • If you have not visited my website yet, there is a lot of important information on there. Clemensclass.com

  • Please fill out the parent survey information included with this letter and return it at your earliest convenience.

  • We will use Class Dojo to track behavior and share photos and videos of student work. Please sign up for a Class Dojo account so that you can be better connected with your child’s learning and behavior this year. (There is a handout with instructions in your child’s yellow folder)

  • We could use the following donations for our classroom this year: boxes of tissue and rolls of paper towels.

  • Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school to keep on their desk.

I am really looking forward to getting to know all of you this year. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. The best way to get a hold of me is via e-mail  or by phone.
E-mail: clemensa@cajonvalley.net  Phone: 619-588-3136

Sincerely,
Mrs. Clemens

The students are working hard on their creative writing project (due Friday). Make sure you take some time to read your child's book either before they turn it in or when it comes home next week. They are so awesome! I am very proud of all their hard work with writing and illustrations. The "About the Author" section is especially cute. :)

Chapter 12 Math Test - since today is the last day to turn in work or re-take tests I am going to offer an opportunity for students to make up points on their math test since they won't have a chance to re-take it. Students may correct any of their wrong answers for 1/2 point per question. They must show ALL of their work. Tests are going home today.

A BIG thank you to Erin Dionisiou, Ugne Roper & Jennay Gunderson for taking over the 4th grade Art Program while I am on maternity leave!

Students whose families have submitted $30 toward the class Gala Basket will receive free dress for the next 5 Mondays after they donate. Thank you for supporting this cause!

Reading Logs/Homework Planners- I've noticed that MANY students have not been filling out or turning in their reading logs each week. Reading outside of school is an important part of their weekly homework. Every week the students should be reading at LEAST an hour from their book report novel or another free choice text. I also feel that it is important for parents to look at the homework planner for the week and read ALL of the announcements.  Please try to make this a weekly habit with your child.

Gradelink- Students should be checking gradelink at least once a week. I recommend that families check gradelink on Wednesdays when graded student work goes home.  Last week the students received their progress report and had a reflection assignment to go along with it. This should have been signed and turned in. The trimester ends in 2 weeks so I don't want there to be any surprises when report cards go home. NO WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER TUESDAY 2/13.

Father Daughter Dance
The 8th Annual SJA Father Daughter Dance is coming up on February 10th. Invitations were sent home last week with your daughters. Please RSVP by bringing your check to the front office.

Overnight Forms are due on the 23rd. We have all of our parent chaperones for the trip. Thank you so much to our volunteers: Eric Noguchi, Jim Laverty, Sandra Van Gilder, Kellie Kaseburg, Sue White, Jennay Gunderson, Susan Hanna & Cherine Tavassoli. I do not take requests for cabin or carpool groups but if your child has some nighttime or homesick issues, please communicate them with me ASAP. Thank you!

Valentine Baby Shower & Class Party
A big thank you to Cathy Breen, Jennay Gunderson & Claudia Trietley for organizing our Valentine Party this year! These fun and special events will take place on February 13th this year so that we can keep the tone of Ash Wednesday on the 14th.  It is an SJA tradition that around Valentines Day each year we have a baby shower where the students bring in baby gifts to be donated for mothers in crisis. To go along with our green initiative, gifts should NOT be wrapped this year.  Our class's donations go to the Life Choices Organization.  It is a very fun addition to our Valentines Day celebrations. The students may dress up in festive "party clothes" (dresses/skirts and blouses, slacks and collared shirts for the boys... it is fun if they dress Valentine themed :-)

Students may also bring in Valentines for their classmates on that day. A class list with instructions went home last week. Please keep our school's wellness policy in mind. There should be no candy attached to the Valentines. Students will get at treat at the class party. Students should bring in brown paper grocery bags by 2/12 to make mailboxes out of.

Cold & Flu Season - Please help keep our students healthy by keeping sick kiddos home and reminding your child to wash their hands. We will be doing lots of cleaning and sanitizing in the classroom to hopefully keep away any germs. Thank you for your help in these efforts!

Writing Journals -  Starting in the third trimester, students will be responsible for writing TWO paragraphs in their writing journals each week.

Guardian Angel Program
What is better than the gift of Catholic education? The SJA Guardian Angel Program helps bridge the gap between our affordable tuition and the actual cost of educating each student. Additional information can be found here or on the donation form here. Thank you for your support! We are hoping for 100% family participation.

Biography Book Report due on Monday! This is an at-home iPad project that the students should be working on every night this week.

Mandatory Parent Meeting Next Wednesday 6:00 PM
Our overnight field trip is in April this year but I want to touch base with the parents before I go on Maternity Leave.  This is a Parent ONLY meeting. One parent of each student is required to attend. It should only be about 30 minutes long. Thank you!

Field Trip to Mission San Diego de Alcala Next Week
To kick off our mission reports we will be visiting Mission San Diego de Alcala on Tuesday, January 16th. We will leave school at 8:15 and return before  our normal lunch time. Permission Slips went home before break. Please turn them in before Thursday 1/11.  Thank you to my drivers: Kim Davis, Kristina Laverty, Erin Dionisiou, Tina Gilmore, Kellie Kaseburg, Ugne Roper & Sandra Van Gilder!

Mission Reports

We are starting our biggest research project of the year next week on the California Missions. The students will get to choose their missions this Thursday (everyone gets a different one). If there is one that is special to your family, please let me (and your child) know ASAP and I will do my best to make sure they get to research that mission.  All of the missions and interesting and special in their own way so no matter which one they have, they are sure to learn lots!

This is an in-class research project, but the students may need to do some work at home depending on what they finish in class. One typed paragraph of the report is due each Friday. The final report will be put together at home. Information on the project, due dates and how you can best support your child will go home this Thursday. Please look for that and go over it with your child, sign it, and turn it back in by Tuesday 1/16.

The building of a mission model is an OPTIONAL project. Information for this is going home on Thursday as well.

Parent Help Needed! I am hoping that a few parents could take the reins on planning and organizing our class Valentines Day Party.  I know this will be a huge help to the sub and really fun for the students. I have LOTS of ideas & resources. If you're interested please sign up here and shoot me an e-mail and we can chat. Thank you so much!

Social Studies Chapter 3 Quiz
A study guide went home today with the students to help them prepare for their quiz on Friday 1/12.  The short summary at the end of each lesson in the chapter is a great resource to reread.

Star Belly Sneetches & MLK Jr. Day

This Friday the students will be participating in an activity  to help them understand segregation on a more personal level. I use Dr. Seuss' book The Sneetches to organize the activity and foster a deep discussion on segregation and Civil Rights. Some students will be "Star Bellies" for the day while others will be "Plain Bellies". They cannot sit together, use the same facilities or play together at recess. Halfway through the day we switch so every has the experience of being a Star Belly and Plain Belly. (Star Belly Sneetches get special privileges all day).  I have been so impressed with the empathy and compassion that this activity inspires in the classroom.  The students do not know about the activity so please wait until after Friday to talk to them about it. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Cold & Flu Season - Please help keep our students healthy by keeping sick kiddos home and reminding your child to wash their hands. We will be doing lots of cleaning and sanitizing in the classroom to hopefully keep away any germs. Thank you for your help in these efforts!

Biography Book Report
The students should have checked out and began reading their biography books before Christmas break. Luckily, the biographies are short, easy reads so if your child has not checked theirs own yet, please encourage them to start reading this week. The project is a fun and easy at-home iPad project.  We went over directions for the project today in class. Please ask your child about this fun project!

Additional information can be found here or on the donation form here. Thank you for your support! We are hoping for 100% family participation.
